Kaduna, Aug. 8, 2019 Hope for the Village Child, a Kaduna-based Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) on Thursday

promised to partner some health centres to enable adolescent girls to get adequate sexual and reproductive health information.

The CEO/Coordinator of the organisation, Ruth Barrera, disclosed this during a courtesy visit to the Chairperson of

Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

She said that the NGO, in its effort to reduce the rising spate of teenage pregnancies among adolescent girls,

organised a programme tagged “Safe Spaces for Adolescent Girls to Access Information on Sexual and Reproductive Health”.

She added that “the programme became necessary going by the rising rate of rape cases in the country.

“If these girls had access to basic information on sexual and reproductive health, unwanted pregnancies would

be avoided.

“The lack of information from schools, parents and communities led some of these girls to their untimely deaths,

owing to badly done abortions.”

Barrera said Hope for the Village Child, also working with another NGO — Rise Up for Girls, Women and Adults,

was determined to take girl-child issues seriously.

On her part, Hon. Kadijah Ladi Yahuza, the Chairperson of Chikun Local Government, pledged the council’s

support for the project.

She added that the problem of teenage pregnancies and the rise in rape cases had actually been giving her sleepless nights.

She added that “I applaud you for your project and also thank you for using Chikun Local Government Area as your take off point.

“I will do everything in my capacity to support and even bring the Kaduna State commissioner for health into the fold.”

The partnering health facilities are: General Hospital, Sabon-Tasha, Kujama Primary Health Care Centre (PHC) and Maraban

Rido Primary Health Centre.

These health facilities are expected to create places for Sexual and Reproductive health information, especially for adolescent

girls.
