Nexus Country, an NGO on Wednesday organized a one day training for women journalists in Plateau on curbing hate speech in reporting.

Dr Charles Dickson, the NGO’s Coordinator, said that the position of women in peace building was vital and should be encouraged to give power to their voices.

He said that women journalists should be open to develop personal knowledge about dangerous speech that would enable them gain new ideas and strategies to prevent and counter it.

“Biased behavior and language can incite violence, escalate into mass atrocities and so they are basically dehumanizing and should be avoided,” he said.

The coordinator said that violence may be prevented by interfering with dangerous speech, inhibiting it, limiting its dissemination, undermining the credibility of the speaker and inoculating the audience against it so that they are less easily influenced.

He however urged women journalists to broaden their horizon so as to catch up with growing technology in the world.

In her remarks, Ms Jennifer Yerima, the state Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) said that women had a vital role to play in peace building by curbing hate speech.

According to her, women have the ability to mend bridges, hate speech and also establish friendship and bring people together.

The chairperson commended organizers of the training saying that it would encourage women journalists to focus more on hate speech in their reportage.
