NHCR decries lack of human rights awareness in Abia

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Abia, has expressed worry over lack of adequate awareness on human rights among residents of the state.

Ms Uche Nwokeocha, the Coordinator of NHRC in the State made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Umuahia on Thursday.

She said that even when they knew their rights were being abused, they did not have the means to protect such rights.

According to her, the commission has been receiving petitions from residents since the commencement of the commission in the state in February, but noted that those petitions were not enough.

Nwokeocha, who is a legal practitioner, attributed the low number of petitions to lack of awareness on the work of the commission.

“People who call on phone, the advice we give to them, they do not follow up and I know this is lack of awareness of what NHRC can do for them,” she said.

Nwokeocha said that the commission had prepared some modalities to checkmate the arbitrary arrests and human rights abuse of innocent citizens by security agents.

“We are visiting the prisons and we are going to talk to the prisoners; we will also have a discussion with the Controller of Prisons in the state.

“We want to see how we can work with the police,” the NHRC coordinator told NAN.

She said that the commission would embark on enlightenment campaigns by collaborating with churches, the media as well as market and trade associations.

NAN reports that the location of the NHCR office in Abia, which seems to be in hideout, might have contributed to the lack of awareness.
