Nigeria needs community policing – Legal practitioner

A legal practitioner, Mr Fidelis Onyebueke, on Wednesday, said that Nigeria needed community policing for effective security of the nation.

Onyebueke, who was reacting to the inauguration of the regional security outfit, ‘Operation Amotekun’ in the South West, said he saw nothing wrong with the outfit if it could be properly managed.

According to him, if the governors are considered to be the Chief Security Officers of their states, they are perfectly in order in creating a body that can help the police in performing its functions effectively.

“We need to ask ourselves what the outfit is out to do or, is it a social gathering or for the security of lives and property and the point has been made clear.

“I know the Federal Government has the constitutional powers to establish the police, army and other paramilitary forces to protect the country but in the state, the big question is who is the Chief Security Officer?

“We have bodies like the Governors’ Forum in the country’s different regions; so, what is wrong if such bodies come together to proffer solutions to the lingering security challenges within their area.

“Although, I see nothing wrong in the establishment of ‘Operation Amotekun’, there must be a legal backing by the various state Houses of Assembly.

“This is one of the reasons why crimes have drastically reduced in Anambra; there is no difference between ‘Amotekun’ and the armed vigilante groups, put in place to secure their areas like Anambra.

“Some people fear that the outfit may be hijacked by the governors to perpetuate high-handedness but have we tried it?

“We need to give community policing a chance, it can be disbanded by the same people that formed it if it is used for another purpose,’’ he said.

On Jan. 9, the South West governors met in Ibadan to inaugurate a regional security outfit, ‘Operation Amotekun’ with 120 vehicles and 100 motorcycles.
