Nigerian Tribune has won four awards at the 2017 Nigeria Media Merit Awards, held at the Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos, on Wednesday.
Nigerian Tribune won the coveted Prize for Editorial Writing of the Year; Sulaimon Olanrewaju won the Coca-Cola Prize for Brand and Marketing Reporter of the Year, and the MTN Prize for Telecommunications Reporter of the Year; and Yejide Gbenga-Ogundare won the Saraki Prize for Agriculture Reporter of the Year.
This is just as President Muhammadu Buhari restated his administration’s commitment to upholding press freedom.
Buhari, who was represented by Minister for Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed at the event, said his administration would continue to uphold the freedom of the press and create an enabling environment for journalists.
He highlighted the achievements of the administration and noted the commitment of the present administration to the fight against corruption.
Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Tunji Bello, in his address, urged the winners to see the awards as a call to duty.
Also present were Alhaji Lateef Jakande and his wife; Chairman, Board of Trustees, Engr Vincent Maduka; Professor Ralph Akinfeleye; Mr Yemi Akeju; Lady Cecilia Ibru; Dr Oscar Ibru; Professor Wale Omole; Chairman, Punch Newspapers, Mr Wale Aboderin; Victoria Eze Okoli; Babatunde Jose Jr.; Prof Umar Dambatta of the NCC was represented; Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Lagos State, Mr Steve Ayorinde; Mrs Funke Egbemode, among others.
According to Prof. Akinfeleye, the cut-off point for nominations was raised to 75 per cent from 70 per cent for 2017, in line with global standards.
Alhaji Lateef Jakande received the Distinguished Leadership Award; Eminent Media Icon was awarded to Dr Alex Ibru; Distinguished Leadership Award went to Founder of Punch Newspapers, late Chief Olu Aboderin, while Legendary Doyen of Nigeria Media was awarded to Late Dr Ismail Babatunde Jose.
The event was anchored by renowned comedian, Gbenga Adeyinka the 1st.
