A U.K.-based sports concern, SKODA Bling Sports, has indicated interest to take over the sponsorship of Ojo Super Cup football tournament, organised by the Ojo Local Government Council.

Lawal Adams-Adeniyi, the Chairman, Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the annual grassroots soccer competition, on Wednesday durring the draws for the 16 registered teams at Ojo, Lagos, said that this year’s edition would kick-off on Saturday.

“With 16 teams playing for supremacy and reward, the sponsorship will turn around the fortunes of the event.

“SKODA sports have made available N 500,000 to reward the officials, provide money and other sports accessories to make the event more glamorous and advance the welfare of participants,” he said.

According to him, the LOC has yet to make known the prize money for the winners but the players are sure of being linked to professional clubs in the U.K. to enable them ply their trade.

He added that the prize money was good and was in the hands of the LOC who would before the take-off of the tournament on Saturday announce it to encourage the players to do their best.

The match Commissioner for the one month soccer event, Emeka Uzoukwu, advised players to play to the rules as old FIFA rules would be used in the competition.

He said that since the new FIFA rules guiding football competition had yet to be the subsisting practice in Nigeria, the players should play to the whistle and not the flag of the assistant referee to avoid confusion.

The official who commended the sponsors for their large heart, added that the Chief Executive Officer of SKODA Sports, Victor Osage, was a beneficiary of a local tournament years ago in the same Ojo area.

“For him to see it necessary to give back to the society that made him is worthy of note,” he said.

NAN reports that the competition is open to all ages with teams around the old Ojo Local Government Area participating.

Fans have been talking about the tournament in the area with some of them painting commercial buses in the colours of their darling teams ahead of Saturday.
