Nigerian Olympic champion and national boxing coach, Jerry Okorodudu, has blamed the dearth of promising young boxing talents in the country on inadequate training equipment.

Okorodudu told the Nigeria News Agency on Wednesday in Benin there were no state -of- the -art equipment in boxing gyms nationwide.

The pugilist, who represented Nigeria’ at the 1994 Los Angeles Olympic Games, said boxing remained as interesting as it would ever be.

“Mediocrity in the administration of the sport and lack of equipment are some of the reasons the country has not been fairing well in boxing.

”Gone are the days when, in the old Bendel, Dr Ogbemudia will provide us with the best of equipment and also encourage us to go to school.

”Athletes then were busy all year round with competitions every weekend in all sports to keep them in shape and hungry for laurels.

”But today, we have people who are no boxers at the helm calling the shots. They know next to nothing and are neither interested in the development and growth of the sport nor listen to good suggestions from practitioners that will promote the sport.

”Am hoping that these people will see reason and correct the ills and anomaly that have bedeviled boxing, ” he said.

Okorodudu said even though his contract as a national coach would expire few weeks, he was still being owed months of unpaid salaries.

The former boxer also won two gold medals at the African Championship in 1982.

“It is true I cried out for my unpaid salaries last year which human rights groups assisted me to get, but am still being owed six months salary,” he said.( NAN)
