Opposition in Poland rejects plan to adjourn parliament

Poland’s opposition politicians on Wednesday expressed concerns over the governing party’s unprecedented move to adjourn parliament and reconvene only after a general election scheduled for Oct. 13.
Earlier, the lower house’s presiding committee decided, upon a motion from governing party Law and Justice (PiS), to adjourn after it completed agenda and to reconvene on Oct. 15 to Oct. 16.
It will, however, reconvene not with the newly-elected lawmakers, but in the same line-up of MPs before the election.
The parliamentary session, the last one before the election, was originally supposed to end on Friday.
Stanislaw Terlecki, a Deputy speaker from PiS, said the motion was motivated by a short electoral campaign and requests from lawmakers wanting to campaign in their constituencies, as no new items would be added to the agenda.
The Deputy Speaker, Malgorzata Kidawa-Blonska from the Civic Platform, said the opposition, however, had criticised the unusual move.
“I did not believe in pure intentions of the governing party.
“Law and Justice have some secret plan. Either it does not believe in a positive outcome of the election, or it is preparing a law which in normal conditions will not be approved in a vote,’’ Kidawa-Blonska said.
The Wednesday agenda of the lower house includes a motion of no-confidence against the Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro, over a smear campaign against judges orchestrated by ministry officials.
