Organisation urges investment in youth leadership skills to promote growth

Abuja, April 21, 2019 Mr Joledo Oyewole, Chief Volunteer of ServeLead Global, an NGO, on Sunday underscored the need for investment in platforms for developing leadership skills among young people, to achieve growth.

Oyewole, a 2018 Mandela Washington Fellow, gave the advice in his address at the grand finale of the Leadercom 2019 event held in Abuja.

The event on the theme, “my journey, my truth” was sponsored by Social Good Fund (SGF), an NGO, based in California, U.S.

According to Oyewole, our desire is to enable the youth to be able to communicate great ideas in presentations.

Oyewole said “we heard of the Not Too Young to Run Bill; but we feel it should not be not too young to run, but not too young to dream.

“This is because not all of us want to be politicians; we just want to have a platform to deliver our dreams and that is what informed the Leadercom event.

“Governments at all levels must give youths the display place to dream through the creation of platform for them to express themselves.

“Once they can express themselves and be listened to in a democracy, they would be able to contribute their quota meaningfully to national growth.”

He mentioned that the event attracted 11 trainers and 17 participants across the country through application on the social media.

Speaking, Mr Oliver Hack, Director of Project Development of SGF, said that the event was designed to enable youths to turn their ideas into presentations that could pass life messages and impact their society.

According to him, the event cost 300 U.S. dollars per-participant and my organisation will be looking for a revenue model to sustain it in 2020.

“What we hope not to do is to charge participants who are change makers in their own lives; those who have given so much already of their own lives.

“We do not want them to have to pay to be here because there is wealth in Nigeria and in the U.S.

“We believe that through partnership we hope to bring back Leadercom sometime perhaps in April next year,” Hack said.

The winner of the contest, Miss Rabiyat Usman, said that the event further helped her to develop confidence and competence in public speaking.

“I actually saw this application on social media and I applied; one morning I woke up and saw that I have been selected, having graduated with a First Class in Computer Science.

“So, coming here was more of an opportunity for me to better enhance my capacity, my competence and my confidence.”

For his part, Mr Fabian Igbaji, described leadership communication as a new way of teaching upcoming generations in Nigeria to communicate their purpose effectively.

“You need to identify what you want to do and after that communicate it; it is by so doing that people can reach into your mind as picture drawn for a better Nigeria.

“I believe that young people get better form of leadership if they develop communication; this is what we have gained in the event,” Igbaji said.

Another participant, Mrs Mangga Minakur, stressed the need for early teaching of young people on leadership communication to boost their confidence.

Minakur said, “As a parent I believe that starting such communication with our children will enable them to grow up with it, I appeal to the youth to come and listen to enable them to gain knowledge.”
