Oyo govt tasks LGA, LCDA caretaker chairmen on effective waste management

Oyo state government on Monday urged the caretaker chairmen of the 33 Local Government Areas and 35 Local Council Development Areas to brace up for effective waste management in their respective areas.

Mr Kehinde Ayoola, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, made the call while addressing the chairmen and other stakeholders in a meeting held at the state secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.

According to Ayoola, the involvement of the chairmen was aimed at having a good action plan on waste management in the state.

He noted that waste collection and disposal was the statutory responsibility of the local government, adding that collaboration of the local government chairmen with state government’s efforts would result in effective waste management.

He said Gov. Seyi Makinde administration had zero tolerance to poor waste management and involvement of the council chairmen, who were closer to the people at the grassroots would enhance actualisation of the government’s plans on waste management mechanism.

He disclosed that the state government had engaged the service of a consultant on waste management that would guide the state on its action plan.

Mr Seun Adelore, the chairman of the Oyo State Waste Management Board, implored the chairmen and sanitary officers across the council areas to prioritise waste/refuse collection in their respective local government areas.

Adelore said the board was ready to carry the chairmen along in policy making and implementation as regards to waste control/management.

Speaking on behalf of the chairmen, Mr Suleiman Adeniran, Chairman of Irepo Local Government Area, promised to cooperate with the state government in its efforts to tackle the menace of poor waste management.

Adeniran also urged the Ministry of Environment, Waste Management Board and other relevant agencies to carry them along on waste management issues.
