The Pest Control Association of Nigeria (PECAN) on Tuesday marked its 30th anniversary with a launch of a N50-million campaign fund bid for mosquito control programmes in rural areas of the country.

The event with the theme: “Malaria elimination through effective vector management” took place at Providence Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos State.

It was attended by notable stakeholders in the pest control business, health management, government officials and philanthropists.

Prof. Ayo Awolola, a Public Health Entomologist from the University of Lagos, gave a lecture on: ‘Effective Vector Management as a Panacea for Malaria Control’.

Awolola in his presentation explained that malaria could not be wiped out just by controlling mosquitoes because there would always be mosquitoes.

“What we need is a strong health system to get rid of malaria, and that will entail an integrated vector control management because one method cannot combat the spread of mosquitoes.

“We need an integrated approach that can attack the larva, pupa and adult stage of mosquito breeding as well as appropriate health system,’’ he said.

He said that Nigeria and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) were at present the two countries bearing the burden of malaria scourge in Africa.

The association also sworn-in Mr Kunle Williams as PECAN’s new President General,  performed the induction of its new members as well as those of new member-companies.

The chairman of the occasion, Chief Michael Ade-Ojo, in his address of welcome commended PECAN for the good works it had been doing in the last 30 years.

Ade-Ojo, also the Chief Executive Officer of Elizade Motors, described the new president as a good and a hard working man.

He prayed that Mr. Williams’ tenure would be successful and full of beneficial experiences for PECAN and the nation.

In his acceptance speech, the new president, Mr Kunle Williams thanked the members of PECAN for reposing confidence in him.

He said that led to them electing him their new president.

The new president pledged his utmost loyalty to the association and promised to work toward improving on the standards his predecessors-in-office had set.

“On my honour, I will live up to the expectation expected of me by PECAN and serve to better the lots of our member-companies.

“I will uplift the standards of the association through advocacy, inter-agency cooperation and many others.

“Thank you for choosing me. I promise I will not  let you down,” Williams said.

The Nigeria News Agency reports that the wife of the Lagos State Governor, Mrs Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu,  who was represented  was among the recipients of awards at the event.

Other recipients include: Dr. Chioma Amajoh (Mama Malaria); and the Registrar, Environmental Health Officers Registration Council of Nigeria, Dr. Dominic Abonyi.

Also were the National President, Environmental Health Officers Association of Nigeria (EHOAN), Sanitarian (Dr.) Sam Akingbeyin; and the Managing Director, Refuse Management and Sanitation Board, Kano, Hon. Abdullahi Gwarzo.
