The Chairman, National Population Commission (NPC), Mrs Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, has said that the 2018 Nigeria demographic health survey (NDHS) was innovative in its approach.

Salu-Hundeyin said this in Jos on Friday during the dissemination and official inauguration of the 2018 NDHS Report in Plateau.

The Nigeria News Agency reports that NPC chairman was represented at the event by Cecilia Dapoet, Federal Commissioner, representing Plateau in the commission.

She said that in the new innovation, an anthropometry process was improved to collect high quality height and weight measurements from children and women.

Salu-Hundeyin said that a new biomarker checklist was introduced to ensure that no important task was missed.

According to her, the NDHS is carried out every five years to gather information on the demographic and health characteristics of the population.

‘’Information such as fertility preferences, infant and child mortality, pregnancy, immunisation, maternal and adult mortality and awareness were gathered,” she explained.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Nimkong Ndam, also represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mr Martin Azzuwut, said that the importance of the NDHS could not be overemphasised, as it was a requirement for planning.

Azzuwut said that the information from the survey was important for research, planning and implementation of government policies for the benefits of all.

He, however, said that the NDHS report was richer and more innovative than the previous ones and that it included other areas that were not in the previous ones.

Ndam commended the efforts of the Federal Government and the NPC by coming out with the documents.
