Police arraign 4 for alleged unlawful possession of hemp in Osogbo

The police in Osun, on Thursday, arraigned four persons in Osogbo for alleged unlawful possession of 40 wraps of Indian hemp.

The defendants, Fatima Ahmed, 19; Oladele Adeshina 20; Taofeek  Rahman, 28 and Lukman Azeez, 33, are facing charges of unlawful possession of Indian hemp and breach of peace at an Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court .

They, however, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Adeoye Kayode, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on Oct .1, at about 9.00 pm. at Oke-Onitea area of Osogbo.

Kayode said that they breached the public peace by gathering and smoking Indian hemp in their community.

“Forty wraps of cannabis sativa, also known as Indian hemp, were found on them when they were arrested,” he told the court.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 516(d), 249(d) and 430 of the Criminal Law of Osun, 2002.

The Defence Counsel, Mr Kunle Asiyanbi, prayed the court to grant the defendants bail in the most liberal terms.

The Magistrate, Mrs O. A. Oloyade, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N50,000, each with one surety in like sum.

Oloyade said that the surety must be a civil servant with evidence of tax payments.

The case was, thereafter, adjourned till Nov. 21 for mention. (NAN)
