Police arraign businessman for allegedly absconding with furniture

The police on Thursday arraigned a businessman, John Ekwunife, in a Wuse Zone 6 Magistrates’ Court in Abuja for allegedly absconding with some furniture, valued at N162, 500.

Ekwunife, who is of Wuse Zone 3, was arraigned for criminal breach of trust and cheating.

The Prosecutor, Mr Fidelis Ogbobe, told the court that the case was reported at the Wuse Zone 3 Police Station by one Joseph Nnaji of Intercontinental Plaza Wuse, Zone 3.

Ogbobe told the court that on the first week of May, the complainant entrusted five pieces of office chairs and a table, valued at N162, 500 to Ekwunife to sell.

He said that the defendant was to remit the money back to the complainant through one Chinedu Onuora.

The prosecutor said that in the process, the defendant deceived Onuora, off loaded the goods from AMAC office and took Onuora to Jabi, where he claimed the money was to be given to him.

Ogbobe said the two men went to Jabi where Ekwunife bought food for Onuora and while Onuora was eating, the defendant absconded through the back door with the items.

He said that every effort made by Onuora to call the defendant proved abortive until he was sighted, arrested and taken to the police station much later.

According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene the provisions of Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.

Ekwunife, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Magistrate, Mr Ibrahim Muhammed, admitted him to bail in the sum of 250, 000 with one surety in like sum.

Muhammed said that the surety must be reasonable, reliable and must be a civil servant living within the jurisdiction of the court.

The magistrate adjourned the case until July 1 for hearing.
