Police arraign car dealer over alleged car theft

A 41-year-old car dealer, Frank Abayomi,  on Thursday appeared in an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos over the alleged theft of a Hyundai car worth N3 million.

The Police charged Abayomi, who resides at No. 10, Magodo Estate in Lagos, with conspiracy and theft.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Donjour Perezi, told the court that the defendant committed the offences with some other persons still at large on July 19 at 11a.m. at Mile 12, in Lagos.

Perezi said the defendant stole the car with registration No: SMK 511 DW,  property of Miss Ngozi Njokuoma.

According to him, Ngozi travelled to her home town and left the car in her sister’s care  Miss Sandra Njokuoma.

“Sandra contracted the defendant to drive her to Mile 12 market to buy some foodstuff.

“They had agreed to meet at First Bank after her shopping, but she ended up waiting for hours, in vain.

“After 24 hours, she reported the case at the Ogudu Police Station, believing someting bad must have happened to him, but he was later arrested,’’ he said.

Perezi said the offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The New Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 287 provides three years imprisonment for stealing, while Section 411 stipulates a two-year term for conspiracy.

The Magistrate, Mrs Bukola Mogaji, however, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Mogaji ordered that the sureties must be gainfully employed, with evidence of two years tax payments to the Lagos State Government.

She then adjourned the case until Sept. 6, for mention.
