Police in FCT arrest man for allegedly impersonating aid of Senate president’s



The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Thursday said it had arrested a man who allegedly impersonated  an aid of the president of the Senate.

The Commissioner of Police (CP) in FCT, Mr Bala Ciroma, disclosed this at a news conference in Abuja.

He said the suspect, who posed as an aid to the president of the Senate to defraud unsuspecting members of the public was arrested at a bank in Gwarinpa area of the territory.

Ciroma said the suspect was arrested while trying to withdraw money sent to his account, by a victim, as proceed of the crime.

According to him, the suspect has admitted during investigation to extorting money from his victims under the guise of assisting them to secure government contracts.

He said that a total of N420,000 was paid into the suspect’s bank account and that an identity card carrying the National Assembly was recovered from him.

The CP said the suspect, on Jan. 20 was arrested by police operatives from Durumi Division over attack and rapping of female victims in the bush.

He said the suspect who operated mostly at night had confessed to the crime after his arrest following a complaint to a police patrol team by one of his victims.

Ciroma said another victim also identified the suspect as the person who raped her sometime ago.

He also said that a suspected car snatcher was on Jan. 14 arrested while trying to snatch a Lexus Jeep from his victim at gunpoint.

Ciroma said the suspect was arrested at Gbazango area of Kubwa following a distress call.

He said the exhibits recovered from the suspect were one locally made pistol and one Lexus 300 jeep, which had been released to the owner on bond.

He said operatives from the command on Jan. 4 recovered one AK47 rifle, one AR rifle, two pump action rifles, four magazines, 14 cartridges, 73 AK-47 ammunition, 28 AR ammunition and one hammer.

Ciroma said the weapons recovered, following a tip off, were concealed in a bag that was buried in an undeveloped land located in Congo street, Sun-city estate.

The CP said operatives of the Command’s Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) acting on credible intelligence arrested nine suspected cultists, terrorising Karimo and its environs.

He said the suspects, arrested in Karimo area were members of the Aro Baga Confraternity.

Ciroma said the exhibits recovered from the suspects were  one locally made pistol, two cutlasses, saw blade and one knife.

He said the suspects in all the arrests would be arraigned in court upon conclusion of investigation.
