The Enugu State Government says it is targeting 1,050,000 children under five years for vaccination in the National Immunisation Plus Days which began on Saturday.

Mr Fabian Neboh, Public Relations Officer, Enugu State Primary Health Care Development Agency, gave the figure in an interview  with the Nigeria News Agency in Enugu on Saturday.

According to him,  the exercise will end on Feb. 18.

Neboh said that the vaccination was free  and  safe.

According to him, immunisation teams will visit churches on Sunday and schools on Monday for the vaccination.

He said that the agency had embarked on awareness creation on the immunisation and mobilised community leaders to ensure success.

The spokesman said: “We are targeting 100 per cent coverage, and the agency has done massive mobilisation of traditional and community leaders as well as written to churches and schools concerning the polio vaccination.

“Our jingles are currently running in local language in radio and television stations to herald the exercise, while our town announcers have been announcing the exercise in all nooks and crannies and pleading with residents, especially mothers and caregivers, to cooperate with vaccination workers coming around their homes, churches and schools.’’ he said.

Neboh said that vaccination for polio and other child-killer diseases  could be accessed free in health facilities especially primary healthcare centres.
