Pompeo in Oman for talks with new ruler

U.S. Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, on Friday landed in Oman and met with the new ruler of the Gulf country, which maintains good ties with both Washington and Tehran.

Oman’s state News Agency (ONA), reported that Sultan Haitham Said of Oman, received Pompeo at the royal palace in the capital Muscat and reviewed aspects of bilateral cooperation between the two countries and issues of mutual interest.

Haitham, a former Culture Minister, assumed power in January, succeeding Oman’s long-time ruler Qaboos, who died aged 79.

Pompeo is the highest U.S. official to visit Oman since Qaboos’ death.

“I will express my deepest condolences on the passing of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, a revered leader and friend to all nations,” Pompeo said.

Pompeo flew to Oman from Saudi Arabia, where he discussed the ongoing threat posed by the Iranian regime, with the kingdom’s Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman.

Under Qaboos, Oman cultivated good relations both with its Sunni Muslim neighbours in the Gulf as well as with their Shiite rival Iran.

However, due to negotiations that took place in Oman that laid the groundwork for the international nuclear accord with Iran, from which the U.S. withdrew in 2018.

Tensions between Washington and Tehran have steadily escalated since President Donald Trump pulled out of the nuclear deal and commenced maximum campaign of re-imposing sanctions against Iran.
