Priest urges children to engage in works of mercy

Abuja, April 28, 2019 A Catholic Priest, Rev. Fr Emmanuel Ejimonu, has urged children to engage in corporal works of mercy and encourage their parents and friend to do same so as to gain eternity.

The corporal works of mercy are kind acts by which Christians help their neighbours with material and physical needs.

Ejimonu made the call in his Homily at a Mass celebrated for children to mark the Divine Mercy Sunday, at St. Charles Lwanga Parish, Apo in Abuja.

The Priest said that the children could carry out works of mercy by forgiving people, showing love, praying for sinners as well as involving themselves in charity works.

“Those works of mercy will qualify Christians to go to heaven, according to the Gospel of Mathew, Chapter 25, verses 34 to 46,’’ he stated.

Ejimonu also encouraged the children to emulate the apostle of Divine Mercy, Saint Maria Faustina, who established the devotion to Divine Mercy.

“The devotion has three components – to ask for, and obtain the mercy of God; to trust in Christ’s abundant mercy, and to show mercy to others.

“You should know that Jesus has given the apostles the power to forgive sins in the Sacrament of Reconciliation; this is also key to the divine mercy devotion.

“Saint Maria Faustina described the sacrament as `tribunal of God’s mercy.

“So, when you offend God, you should learn to ask for forgiveness and also tell people you are sorry when you offend them,’’ he said.

The feast of Divine Mercy, one of the activities of the Sunday, as recorded in the diary of Saint Faustina, receives from Jesus Himself the biggest promises of grace related to the Devotion of Divine Mercy.
