Abuja, Nov. 8, 2019 Mr Dasuki Arabi, Director-General, Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR), on Friday urged citizens to participate actively in government, ask questions and hold government accountable.

Arabi gave the charge in Abuja at a dialogue between BPSR and Citizens Group in conjunction with Global Centre for Human Empowerment and Entrepreneurship Development (GLOCHEED).

The dialogue focused on establishing a sustainable mechanism for coordinated engagement with government.

“Citizens must come out and correct government where they make mistakes; they must discuss policy formulation and implementation.

“Citizens must be carried along. They must be engaged and given their right to information. Government is expected to provide basic services to the citizens such as roads, hospitals, water, education and much more.

”Government holds citizens responsible for many things such as taxes, service in the military, obedience to the law, among others.

”Citizens, who understand these duties, are in the best position to hold governments accountable,” he said.

According to Arabi, the GLOCHEED partnership platform was created to strengthen the relationship between government and citizens, with a view to establishing a sustainable mechanism to deepen citizens access to governance processes.

Greg Anyaegbudike, Federal Team Leader, DFID, in a remark, said that there were many avenues for citizens to engage government and citizens must take the opportunity.

“When citizens ask questions around finance and documentation in governance, it helps government to deliver better on its mandate.

“The government has demonstrated willingness to engage the citizens; it is now up to citizens to engage government constructively and objectively,” he said.

Mrs. Rose Gyar, Acting Director General, Global Centre for Human Empowerment and Entrepreneurship Development (GLONETHEED), said that the programme aimed at creating synergy between government and the people.

Gyar, however, advised Nigerians to take advantage of the opportunity to participate in governance and better their businesses.
