Red Cross tasks volunteers on selfless service to humanity

The Nigerian Red Cross in Taraba on Wednesday urged new volunteers, who joined the organisation to be selfless in their service to humanity.

Mr Martins Manja, Taraba Secretary of the organisation, made the appeal while addressing volunteers as part of activities to mark the World Red Cross Day in Jalingo.

Manja said the day was celebrated globally as a mark of honour to the founder of Red Cross, Sir Henry Dunant, who was born on May 8, 1828.

According to him, there is need to train volunteers to gain knowledge of first aid to assist in times of emergency.

He said the organisation maintained high level of integrity in its activities in various states of Nigeria.

He enjoined volunteers to always bear  in mind the seven fundamental principles of the organisation, which were humanity,  impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service,  unity and universality.

Mr Mamuda Yusuf, one of the oldest volunteers, who joined the organisation in 1972, enjoined volunteers to be steadfast and remain good ambassadors of the Nigerian Red Cross.

“You must be disciplined and bear in mind that God has called you to serve humanity and improve the society.

“Red Cross work is not about money but service to humanity and you must know this and make it your driving force,” he said.
