Re-elected Afghan President, Ashraf Ghani, on Friday said that a reduction in violence in Afghanistan would begin at midnight.

Earlier, the U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, said that the U.S. had reached an understanding with the militant Taliban about a significant reduction in violence.

Ghani said all Afghan forces would be in active defence positions, and would closely monitor the situation.

He added that operations against other insurgent groups including Islamic State militants and al-Qaeda would continue.
