Hate speech: Expert urges government on transparency
Abuja, April 24, 2019 Mr Babayo Damisa, an Information Communication Technology (ICT) expert, has advised government at all levels to make factual and timely information available to the public to reduce the incidence of hate speech.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Abuja, Damisa said that prompt release of factual information for public consumption would help to checkmate hate speech.
Damisa said that hate speech was detrimental to societal growth as ‘it causes a lot of havoc”, and urged government to monitor and volunteer accurate and factual information at all times.
“This will reduce hate speech, because leaving the platform to run on rumours always bring about hate speech,” said Damisa, Managing Director, Damisah Creative Agency.
Damisa advocated the regulation of social media on hate speech in such a way that would not infringe on free speech.
He also called on government to look into the area of Gem development, Visual Effect (VSF) and Animation in film production.
RubyGems is a package manager for the Ruby programming language that provides a standard format for distributing Ruby programs and libraries.
According to him, Gem development is among the most profitable businesses in the world as its revenue is higher than what is generated from the movie industry
“So, Nigeria should not be left behind in this feat, as China has gone far, Indian has gone far and the country has the capacity, human intellect and personnel to go into Gem development.
‘`This government should rally round and bring this on board so that we could derive the benefit of this.
“The movie industry in Nigeria has gone a long way and we can further enhance it to meet Hollywood by training our youths in Visual Effects
