Republic of Korea tasks youths to express themselves through creativity

Amb. Lee In-tae gave the advice  at the University of Lagos, Akoka, during  the final  of 8th K-pop Dance Competition.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that 10 out of the 37 dance groups  that participated from  across the country  made it to the final.

Lee said that dance teaches respect and help people to think creatively.

“K-Pop is now increasingly becoming a universal trend. It binds people from all over the world together; it is a force of unity and friendship as it grows.

“No matter the language, music, culture or nation, dance will be understood because it is universal,” he said.

The ambassador noted that many K-Pop artistes had begun to  grow their influences through  the various social media platforms.

“With the rising influence of Idol groups and “Be There Soon” (BTS); K-Pop popularity has gone global,” he said.

He said that BTS had topped Billboard 200 chart three times,   ranked among the TIME Magazine’s  100 most influential people of 2019 and also attended the UN General Assembly in  Year 2018.

He said that Kim Namjoon, BTS leader delivered a very touching speech, sending out messages of hope and courage to the world during the 2018 UN Assembly.

That  is what dance, music and culture do; to unite people, Lee said.

The ambassador said that he was happy that more Nigerians had  fallen  in love with K-Pop dance.

“It has helped to strengthen bilateral and mutual relations between Korea and Nigeria.

“We have  bilateral relations with Nigeria in cultural, economic and other areas,” he said.

Also, Lee Jin Su, the Director of the  Korean Cultural Centre at the Korean Embassy, said that they wanted to create unity among Nigerians through dance.

“The aim is to promote understanding and strengthen bilateral relations between both countries through cultural exchange programmes,” he said.

He said that this was the  first time K-Pop dance would  hold outside Abuja.

He said that the participating teams were allowed to choose from any of the listed K-Pop songs,  make their video with the songs and submit their entries online for the preliminary screening.

“It is an annual event,” he said.

NAN reports that:  “Jay Race-Jos”; “Rich Company- Kano”; “Octopus Dance zone-Port Harcourt”; “S.O.C.-Sokoto”; “Yebo Dance Nation-Lagos participated in the finals.

Other teams  are:  “D’Generals-Port Harcourt”; “D’Brainy- Port Harcourt”; “Dance X-Calabar”; “Elite Dance crew-Lagos” and “Isaiah 54-Katsina”.

“Octopus Dance Zone” from Port Harcourt emerged the overall winner, “D’Brainy” from Port Harcourt came second while “Isaiah 54” from Katsina came third.

The overall winner went home with  a N500,000-cash prize and an  LG XBoom speaker; the team that came second received a  N300,000-cash prize and an LG XBoom speaker.

The team that came third got a N200,000-cash prize and an LG XBoom speaker.

Dike James from  “Octopus Dance Zone”, from Port Harcourt,  told NAN that his team was  happy to have emerged the overall winner in the competition.

“We prepared very well for the competition, we rehearsed every morning, ” he said.

He added that his team members had finished from the  secondary school.

James added that they were seeking admissions into the university adding that wherever they gained admissions into, they would still  continue to dance.

“We are looking forward to representing  Nigeria in Korea,” he said.
