Residents of Abakaliki in Ebonyi, have called on Gov. Dave Umahi to appoint seasoned technocrats as commissioners in his new cabinet.

A cross section of residents interviewed by the News Agency of Nigeria disclosed this in Abakaliki on Monday.

Mr Onyekachi Iboko, a civil servant, urged Umahi to ensure that those who would make the new cabinet share the same developmental vision with him.

According to him, the success and failure of the administration will be determined by the calibre of people he chose to work with, in the administration.

“Umahi should look beyond party affiliation and go for the best people who can join hands with him in achieving the vision he has for the state and the people.

“He should avoid mediocre politicians who are currently jostling for positions into the cabinet and ensure that round pegs are put in round holes for the benefit of the state,” Iboko said.

Mr Chibueze Iteshi, a youth leader supported the claim, urging the governor to appoint those who would have the interest of the state at heart.

Iteshi specifically appealed to Umahi to appoint somebody who would give priority to youth development as Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development.

“When you develop the capacity of the youth through economic empowerment and engage his mind through sports competitions, crime and criminality will be reduced in our communities.

“There is correlation between idleness and criminality, so, when youths are engaged in meaningful economic and sporting activities, their minds will be taken off crime.

“So, we are looking forward to a situation where the new commissioner would be someone who will be proactive and who will design a workable template for the overall development of youths in the state,’’ he said.

Mrs Nkiruka Elom, a trader at the Abakaliki Main Market urged the governor to appoint God fearing and result oriented persons as commissioners.

She warned against appointment of people with questionable character.

“The governor did well in his first term and that was why the people voted for him in the last election for a second term in office.

“He has started appointments of personal aides who are going to work with him to achieve the mandate of his second tenure administration.

“We, the traders are appealing to him to appoint those who are God fearing. Those who will not use their privileged positions to trample on the rights of the ordinary persons and those who will not loot public treasury to corruptly enrich themselves.

“I urge him to place merit above mediocrity in considering those to offer appointments as his commissioners,” Elom said.

Meanwhile, Umahi has described the staggering number of over 10,000 persons who have applied for appointment as Commissioners, Senior Special Assistants and Special Assistant among others as alarming.

He stated this while inaugurating 22 aides recently appointed as Senior Special Assistants (SSAs), Special Assistants (SAs) at the Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Abakaliki.

“I am told that we have over 10,000 applications for Commissioners, SAs, and SSAs.

“This is in fact troubling and doesn’t give me joy at all,” he said.
