Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) says the Nigerian Police and the judiciary wield enormous power to enforce the rule of law but  calls for caution in the exercise of their duty.

Dr Jide Martins, a Consultant to RoLAC said this on Thursday in Abuja as part of the continuation of FCT police training aimed at acquainting officers with modern practice of investigation.

RoLAC programme is funded by the European Union and managed by the British Council.

Martins said that the power and responsibilities reposed in the police was a huge one, adding that the courts also shared in that huge responsibilities for the purpose of maintaining law and order in the country.

“If you exercise power appropriately, it will make life easy and if you do not exercise the power accordingly, it will make life uneasy for the citizenry.’’

He said that these were the reasons the police must strived to discharge their duties with human face.

He however called on the police to do their job in a human manner, devoid of harassment and intimidation of the citizenry.

Martins said that informant who came to report cases at the police station must be treated with utmost respect, adding that police had often chased away potential informants because of their conduct.

The RoLAC consultant however said that any Nigerian who was aware of offence committed by another and failed to report had also committed an offence.

“If you don’t report cases you are aware of, you are inadvertently conniving with the offender.

“And any citizen who knows that he is under arrest and not cooperating with the police, can be charged with obstructing the course of justice.’’

Nigeria News Agency reports that 44 Investigation Police Officer in the FCT are being trained by RoLAC on investigation, supported by the EU and managed by the British Council.
