Roofing Sheet Company decries multiple taxes in Enugu, threatens shut down

The Emenite Company Ltd, manufacturers of roofing sheets and ceiling boards in Enugu State has expressed dismay over imposition of  multiple taxes from different government agencies in the state.

The Managing Director of the company, represented by the Head of Human Resources, Mrs. Comfort Ibeh made the disclosure in Enugu on Thursday during a familiarisation visit by the Enugu State House of Assembly Committee on Commerce and Industry.

Ibe said that if nothing was done about it, the company would have no option than to shut down its operations in the state.

She however, thanked the lawmakers for the visit and  urged them to appeal to the government to reduce the multiple taxes levied on the company.

She said that the visit was an indication of cordial relationship between the organisation and the state government.

The committee chairman, Mr. Innocent Ugwu, promised to provide enabling ground that would enhance their operations.

Ugwu, representing Igboeze-North II in the assembly, said providing enabling ground would ensure that the industry operated at optimum capacity that would improve the state’s Internally Generated Revenue, IGR.

The committee chairman, who described Emenite as the `symbol’ of the state, vowed to renew the relationship between the assembly and the company to enable it initiate bills and motions that would assist its operations.

In his contribution, the Member representing Awgu South constituency, Mr. Johnson Chukwuobasi   noted that the visit afforded the committee opportunity to suggest better ways to industrialise the state.

Chukwuobasi also urged the company to create job opportunities for unemployed youths in the state.

The Nigeria News Agency reports that the company was established in 1961 by the then Governor of Eastern Region, Dr Michael Okpara.
