S/Africa’s parliament pledges support for South Sudan’s peace process

South Africa’s Deputy President, David Mabuza, on Tuesday reiterated his country’s commitment to pushing South Sudan’s rival parties toward resolving deadlock over contentious issues, particularly the number of the states and boundaries.

Mabuza expressed Pretoria’s readiness to mediate the discussion on the number of states as requested by the regional bloc following his meeting with President Salva Kiir at the State House in Juba.

“We are now proposing a meeting where we will have President Kiir and opposition leader Riek Machar in one meeting where we will probably try to find a lasting solution to peace process in South Sudan.

“The parties to the South Sudan peace process should allow mediators to perform their duty, while consulting with the president and signatories to the September 2018 deal,” Mabuza said.

However, the number of states and boundaries including the security arrangements has remained key critical tasks pending the formation of the transitional government of national unity.

This had so far caused the parties to delay the formation of a new government in 2019 by an additional 100 days to avoid a return to war.

South Sudan descended into civil war in late 2013 and the conflict has created one of the fastest-growing refugee crises in the world.
