The Chairman, Sanga Local Government Area, Kaduna state, Mr Charles Danladi, on Monday advocated the inclusion of community development charters into councils’ annual budgets.

Danladi, who spoke at a town hall meeting organised by an, NGO, Aid Foundation in Gwantu said the charter would allow communities to take ownership of projects to be executed in their areas.

The chairman said the charter would also promote mutual trust and understanding between the local governments and the people.

Danladi, represented by the council’s Vice Chairman of the council, Alhaji Abubakar Umar, said communities would jealously monitor such projects to ensure that specifications and contract terms were followed in the project execution.

“The town hall meeting will be expanded to all levels of the society to ensure effective contribution from all segments of the local government that will in turn, enhance meaningful grassroots development,” he said.

Earlier, the Programme Officer of the NGO, Mr Bobai Bonet, said that the meeting was to sensitise communities on the need for them to participate in budgets right from the planning.

He said that participation of communities, including their development charters, would boost their interest in the implementation of such projects

Bonet said by so doing, the essential needs of the communities would be priorised against as against councils’ sole decision on projects.
