Seed Council will be turned to centre of excellence – DG

Dr Philip Ojo, the Director General, National Agricultural Seed Council (NASC) says efforts are ongoing to turn the seed council into a centre of excellence for seed production in Africa.

Ojo made this known during the field trip by students of the Department of Agric Education of the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria to the council in Sheda, Abuja on Tuesday.

He told the team of 102 final year students that agriculture was a good area of specialisation, adding that the council was  thinking of collaborating with relevant departments in universities in the country.

The director-general said agriculture students were scarce in Nigeria and were also in high demand.

He said there had been many excursions to the seed council by various institutions but students from ABU happened to be the largest number experienced so far.

Dr Chike Uguru from the Agricultural Education Section in  the Faculty of Education, who led the students said the excursion was an annual exercise.

“It is a compulsory aspect of our programme to expose students, particularly those in final year and graduating students to the practical aspects in their field of learning.

“All final year students must pass through this process before graduating,’’ he said.

Uguru expressed appreciation on the eagerness of the staff of the seed council to put the students through all that was necessary for them to practically learn during their trip.

Mr Isaac Timothy, the students’ representative, said they had all been practically taken through the sampling unit to the moisture content, seed health, inspection and processing unit.

“We have learnt practically what we had been taught in theory in the class room,’’ Timothy said.
