Mr Bello Danbatta, the SEMA’s Head of Rescue Operations, confirmed the incident on Friday in Maiduguri.
Danbatta said the insurgents on Thursday night attempted to infiltrate the Dalori Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp on motorbikes at the outskirt of Maiduguri.
The official disclosed that two persons, including an elderly man and a child, were killed by strayed bullets.
He said that the insurgents looted food items and razed some shops in the area, adding that troops successfully repelled the attack.
An eye witness, MalamMallam Modu Isa, recounted seeing several insurgents on motor bikes shooting sporadically and attempted to infiltrate the camp’s fence from the rear and engaged the troops in gun battle.
Isa added that many people in the camp and adjourning communities fled into Maiduguri metropolis to escape the exchange of gun fire between the troops and the insurgents.
