SMW Lagos: Filmmaker harps on importance of film criticism

A Nigerian Film Maker, Mildred Okwo, on Wednesday stressed the importance of film criticism in Nollywood.

Okwo, an award winning Film Director, said this at a Social Media Week in Lagos with the theme: `Why Film Criticism is Essential to the Future of Nollywood.”

Okwo said film makers sometimes misunderstand critics especially the objective ones, who are doing it for the progress of the Nigerian movie industry.

She urged the critics to always do their research and not condemn people’s works all in the name of doing a review.

“I used to believe people thrash your work when they do not understand what film making is all about.

“Criticisms should be part of your work. It is like a training. It prepares you for what is to come. Criticism also adds value to our work.

“You should be able to see some of the flaws in your work too, so you should not be annoyed when it is pointed out.

“The critic himself is learning, so you should not be angry. We have to realise that we are learning from each other.

“Critics are vital to our work. However, they need to be more dynamic and figure out how to support the industry,” she said.

Okwo said that the advent of social media was giving the movie industry more attention and criticism would help reshape the Nigerian movie industry.
