South African authorities vow to tackle violent attacks in hospitals

The department made the remarks following a spate of attacks on health care workers in different hospitals.

“The issue of security at our facilities remains the priority of the ministry of health,’’ health department spokesman Popo Maja told Xinhua.

A female doctor was recently attacked and robbed by three attackers at Pelonomi hospital in Bloemfontein.

Recently, another female doctor fought off a man who attempted to rape her at the same hospital.

The doctor survived after biting off the man’s tongue.

“The ministry is working closely with the Ministry of Police to ensure that our staff, patients and members of the public are and feel safe at our facilities,’’ Maja said.

The South African Medical Association said security matters must be urgently addressed at Pelonomi hospital as it posed a serious risk to workers and patients.

The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (Denosa) president, Simon Hlungwani, said health officials should be pro-active in tackling security problems.
