Start of school postponed as severe weather hits Mallorca

Storms with whirlwinds, heavy rains and hailstorms on Wednesday brought the summer to an abrupt end on the Spanish holiday island of Mallorca, forcing the resumption of schools to be postponed in some areas.

The Regional Government of the Balearic Islands wrote on Twitter that the local authorities said weather warnings were temporarily raised from orange to red, forcing resumption of schools to be postponed to Thursday in several towns.

According to the regional government, no injuries or major damage have been reported so far, but the archipelago’s emergency services reported fallen trees, flooded buildings and roads and boats that had been ripped free from their moorings.

In the mountain community of Escorca, 154 litres of rain per square metre reportedly fell.

At the airport in the capital, Palma, there were delays, and some flights had to be diverted to Ibiza.

However, the National Weather Service (Aemet) warned of downpours and storms for the entire Balearic Island group.

Meanwhile, the weather was expected to calm down on Thursday.
