Surelere/Ogo-Oluwa Constituency win Sunday Dare/Oyo Unity Cup

The Surelere/Ogo-Oluwa Constituency team on Sunday emerged champions of the maiden edition of the Oyo Unity Cup football competition at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan.


The Nigeria News Agency reports that Surelere/Ogo-Oluwa defeated Ibarapa FC 1-0 to claim the top prize.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Oyo State chapter won the third place position after beating Oyo East/West/Atiba Federal Constituency via penalty kicks.

The competition which was sponsored by the Minister for Youths and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, is aimed at discovering talents and nurturing them to stardom.

The final match was watched by many dignitaries such as a former governor of Oyo State, Sen. Abiola Ajimobi, and former Super Eagles coach Adegboye Onigbinde.

Also in attendance were the chairmen of Football Associations (FA) of Oyo State and Ogun, and ex-internationals Ike Shorunmu, Daniel Amokachi, Joseph Yobo and Mutiu Adepoju.

Speaking during the closing ceremony, the Minister said there would be more tournaments not only in football but other sports in the nearest future across the federation.

“I look forward to a tournament that will take place across the federation. But it will not only be in football, other sports would be put into consideration.

“It’s never too late. We have started and we will keep improving on the Unity Cup across the federation to ensure this goes across different states and enable us catch young talents.

“Some of the talents that were discovered are indeed skilful. I am impressed with what I have seen and this will spur me to do  more, knowing that there are lots of talents undiscovered across the federation,” he said.

NAN reports that Yusuf Adewale of NUJ won the best goalkeeper award, while the highest goal scorer award went to Friday Micheal.

The most valuable player award went to Oyetunde Lekan, while the grassroot football supporter award was won by Ibrahim Adeyemi and the fair play award went to Ibadan North.
