Mr Carl Michael, Ambassador of Sweden to Nigeria has called for strategic action and awareness creation to deal with Gender-Based Violence in the country.

Michael said this at a roundtable discussion aimed at addressing gender-based violence affecting especially girls and women in Nigeria.

Nigeria News Agency reports that the event was organised by Plan International in Nigeria in collaboration with the Swedish embassy.

He said that all hands should be on deck if violence against women were to end.

He urged the Nigerian government to show commitment to addressing issues with the violation of the rights of women and the girl-child.

According to the envoy, although gender-based violence is a global problem, the report released by UNFPA on the Nigerian woman that is subjected to one form of violence or the other, is unacceptable.

He specifically mentioned female genital mutilation, child marriage, and human trafficking among others in the country.

The ambassador stressed the need to empower women so that they are able to claim their rights.

He pledged the Swedish government’s readiness to work closely with any organisation willing to help address problems affecting women.

Acting Country Director of Plan International, Mr Oji Ogbureke said his organisation was committed to fighting for gender equality and women’s rights.

Ogbureke expressed joy over the willingness of the Swedish embassy to collaborate with his organisation to address issues affecting women and the girl-child.
