A 25-year-old tailor, Sola Kadir, was, on Tuesday, arraigned before an Ilorin Magistrates’ Court over alleged stealing of his neighbour’s motorcycle.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Sani Abdullahi, told the court that on Jan. 8, the case was reported at the Area Command headquarters, Ilorin, by one Abdulrasheed Popoola, a commercial motorcyclist in Itakure area of the city.

Abdullahi said that the complainant parked his unregistered red-coloured Bajaj motorcycle, with engine number: DUZWKF13799 and Chassis number MDZA18A-19KWS6759, in front of his house, locked.

He said that the complainant checked the motorcycle before he went to sleep that night, and made sure it was properly locked.

The prosecutor noted that the complainant discovered that his motorcycle had been stolen the next day by an unknown person without breaking the entrance door or windows.

He said that the complainant raised the alarm, which made all the people in the compound to rush out, except the defendant.

Abdullahi said that the defendant was strongly suspected, as he always sleeps at home with his friends; but was not seen the morning that the complainant’s motorcycle was stolen.

He noted that during interrogation, the defendant could not give satisfactory account of himself or his movement at the period the complainant’s motorcycle got missing.

The prosecutor said that investigation revealed that the defendant deliberately conspired with his gang, opened the entrance door to the compound and stole the said motorcycle.

Abdullahi said that investigation also indicated that the defendant was a notorious criminal, a marijuana smoker and tout, adding that investigation was ongoing in the case.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.

The Magistrate, Mrs Aminat Shittu, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000, and two sureties each in like sum.

Shittu said that the sureties must reside within the jurisdiction of the court, and adjourned the case till Feb. 13 for further mention.
