Tanzanian president appoints new chief of intelligence

Tanzanian president John Magufuli has appointed and sworn in Diwani Athuman Msuya as the new director general of national intelligence

This is coming after the sacking of the head of the country’s intelligence service, Modestus Kipilimba, according to a statement by the Directorate of Presidential Communication at the State House on Thursday.

The move is seen as a shake-up of the intelligence network ahead of elections next year.

Kipilimba was dismissed as director general of the Tanzania Intelligence and Security Service (TISS) after three years in the post.

No reason was given.

Msuya, whose appointment takes immediate effect, was previously head of the anti-corruption agency and was at one time the director of criminal investigations in the police force.

The presidency said that the incumbent chief of intelligence, Kipilimba, would be assigned other duties.
