Thai school pupils join countrywide student-led calls for democracy

A group of girls became the first Thai high school students to join a wave of political demonstrations.

This was followed by the disbanding of a major opposition party, following university student-led rallies condemning the ruling establishment.

Over 20 pupils from the all-girl Satriwithaya School called for democracy and aired their political frustration during a flash mob at the Democracy Monument in Bangkok on Wednesday.

A court ruled last Friday to dissolve the popular Future Forward Party and ban its leaders from politics for 10 years, sparking nationwide protests which first took place in Bangkok on Saturday.

One high school protester held a sign that read: “If you’re neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.’’

The court ruling is widely viewed as politically motivated, serving the interests of the military-aligned government led by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, who seized power in a 2014 coup.

Prayut retained his seat after an election in March held under new laws his junta introduced.

The Future Forward Party was popular among young voters and finished a strong third in the election. The party was outspoken in its disdain for military-rule.

On Wednesday, over a thousand people sat and cheered for speakers on stage at a political gathering at Thammasat University in Bangkok, while rallies also took place at other universities in the capital.

Student activists from another major Bangkok high school said they would stage demonstrations on Thursday.

The anti-government rallies typically accused Prayut of being a dictator who does not respect democratic values.
