Three in court over alleged destruction of rice farm, malicious damage

Three men, on Tuesday, appeared before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court over unlawful destruction of rice farm and malicious damage.

The defendants, Napiu Mohammed, 34, Mohammed Audu, 20 and Bumba Karba, 17, are facing a two-count charge of wilful destruction of farm and malicious damage.

The prosecutor, Insp. Johnson Okunade, told the court that the defendants and others at large, committed the offence on Jan.7 at Apinrin Alapaye farm settlement in Okemesi-Ekiti.

Okunade said that the defendants and others at large, destroyed a portion of the rice farm, valued at N1.5 million, belonging to one Mr Olusola Sanni.

He alleged that the defendants and others at large, grazed on the rice farm of the complainant and caused damage to the farm, valued at about N4.5 million.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Section 451 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

Okunade asked the court for adjournment to enable him study the case file and present his witnesses.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against them.

Their counsel, Mr Busuyi Ayorinde, urged the court to grant the defendants bail, promising that they would not jump bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Adesoji Adegboye, in his ruling, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N500,000, with two sureties each in like sum.

Adegboye, thereafter, adjourned the case till Feb. 24 for hearing.
