Tourism institute tasks NASS on enabling laws

The National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR) has urged National Assembly to fast tract the passage of its enabling laws to improve its efficiency and enhance its operations. Dr Momoh Kabir, NIHOTOUR Director General disclosed this while speaking with the Nigeria News Agency in Abuja on Tuesday. Kabir said that the institute required legal backing to be more effective in carrying out its mandate. He said that though the institute which started as a “project’’ in 1987 had been operating as a legal entity, backed by its Project Document, the law would further enhance its operation. “The National Assembly is presently working on the bill and we are hopeful that it will be passed soon, so that NIHOTOUR can have enabling laws. “There is, however, a legal instrument for the establishment of NIHOTOUR because it started as a Project with Project Document. “Full enabling laws will enhance our operations and expand our training and empowerment initiatives to the benefit of Nigerians,’’ he said. The DG said that the institute was also grappling with the challenges of accommodation in Abuja. Kabir called on the Federal Government to support the institute in its bid to get a permanent structure as an operational head office and campus in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). “We also need to have an administrative building and a campus in Abuja. We presently operate from a rented building, but having our own structure will go a long way to enhance our performance. “In Kano where the institute first started, we have a full-fledged campus but since government asked us to move our operational head office to Abuja, we have not been able to acquire our own campus. “NIHOTOUR is an apex trainer in hospitality and it will be better to have a permanent site in Abuja, where we can expand and improve,’’ he said. He assured that NIHOTOUR has been able to achieve much of its mandate over the years, in spite of challenges. Kabir said that the institute would strive to consolidate on its achievements in 2020. “Through seminars and workshops, we have been able to raise the bar of consciousness with respect to the importance of hospitality and tourism to the overall development of Nigeria’s economic development. “We also offer assistance to states to help them in setting up their tourism institutions,” Kabir said.
