Town Hall meeting stakeholders advocate interface reps

Stakeholders at a townhall meeting in Ishiagu in Ebonyi say that regular interface between citizens and political representatives will enhance good governance and deepen participatory democracy.

The stakeholders stated this on Friday in Ivo Local Government Area, Ishiagu, during a townhall meeting organised by Mr Oliver Osi, lawmaker representing Ivo state constituency in the Ebonyi House of Assembly.

The townhall organised with support from the International Republican Institute (IRI) was attended by community leaders, political stakeholders, women organisations, students and various interest groups.

The stakeholders who commended the initiative said that the meeting had afforded them opportunity to meet, interact and interface with their representative at the state level.

According to them, the meeting provides a platform to engage with the lawmaker and regular interface will ensure that political representatives get closer to people they are representing.

The stakeholders noted that the interactive meeting had provided them the opportunity to be abreast with the programmes and policies of the state government.

Mrs Patricia Anyim, a woman leader and politician, commended the lawmaker for the initiative.

She stressed the need to sustain the engagement while calling on government to create additional state constituency from the existing Ivo state constituency.

She said that the people of the area were marginalised in terms of distribution of government amenities, employment opportunities and provision of basic amenities, among others.

She said that additional state constituency for Ivo would ensure that people from the local government were adequately represented.

She also called for sustained government’s campaign against herders-farmers clashes, saying that farming activities in the area were threatened.

”We also want you to sponsor a motion or bill to outlaw open grazing in the state to stem the spate of clashes between herdsmen and farmers in different parts of the constituency”, Anyim said.

Also, Mr Solomon Eze, a participant, called for provision of more basic amenities including potable water, electricity, functional health facilities and access roads, among others.
