Unilorin, OER Farms sign 21-yr land lease deal

The management of the University of Ilorin says the institution and OER Farms have signed a 21-year land lease agreement to develop 10,000 hectares of mechanised agricultural land to promote food security and create jobs.

According to a report in the university’s bulletin issued on Monday, the implementation of the project would be in line with best agricultural practices.

The report said that the founder of OER, Dr Muhammadu Indimi, had said that the agricultural development project was to support macroeconomic growth.

It stated that the 10,000 hectres leased land would be developed for the massive production of maize, soya beans, cashew and shea nuts.

The report quoted Indimi as saying the four crops were for both local consumption and export to earn more foreign exchange following a Memorandum of Understanding signed by both parties.

This underscores Federal Government’s progress toward national food security and job creation.

” Improved crop varieties and species of maize, soya beans and cashew are proposed for this 21-year project in Kwara State.

The project is also designed to develop the capacity of the university in agricultural research to improve farm practices and yields, ” Indimi was quoted as saying in the report.

He added that young agripreneurs would also be provided with different perspectives by promoting local inclusion to enhance economic viability in the catchment areas.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Sulyman Abdulkareem, said the development of the agricultural sector was critical for food security and creation of job opportunities.

This is a public-private sector partnership that benefits students, farmers, government and revives the nation’s agriculture.

“We believe this joint venture will achieve phenomenal successes in the agricultural sector of our nation,” the report quoted him as saying.
