Valentine: Cleric tasks christians on love, kindness

Rev. Fr. Stephen Akpe, the Parish Priest of St Augustine’s Pastoral Area, Farin Gada, Jos, has advised Christians to show love and kindness as the world celebrates the Valentine Day on Friday.

Akpe, who is also the Assistant Coordinator of the Justice Development and Peace Commission (JDPC), an NGO of the Catholic Archdiocese of Jos, gave the advice in an interview with Nigeria News Agency on Thursday in Jos.

NAN reports that Feb. 14 has been set aside to commemorate St. Valentine, a Catholic priest, who died preaching and promoting love in the society.

St. Valentine was arrested, jailed and killed in the third century for secretly wedding lovers, after the government of the day had banned marriage among young people.

Akpe called on Christians to emulate St. Valentine’s  virtue of love and kindness, adding that such move would make the world better.

According to him, amid the myriad of challenges bedeviling Nigeria, the act of love and kindness to others would change the narrative.

“The significance of Valentine Day is enormous, coming on the heels of many atrocities in the society.

“We are living in a generation where too much killings, murder, banditry, stereotyping, discrimination and in a society that is a sea of blood.

“It is only love and kindness that can heal our land and make our society better. So, we should begin to have affection for one another; let’s begin to have dignity for one another.

“If we extend love, kindness, consideration and support to one another, our society will be better. This is what is expected of all Christians and Muslims alike,” he said.

The cleric also advised residents of Plateau, particularly the young ones, to celebrate the day with decorum, urging them to shun all evil acts.

He called on both Christian and Muslim clerics to caution their followers against indulging in acts capable of bringing tension in the society during the celebration.
