Gifts shop owners in Jos metropolis are capitalising on the rush by young people to mark Valentine’s Day to make brisk sales, Nigeria News Agency reports.

Valentine’s Day, also called Feast of Saint Valentine, is celebrated annually on Feb. 14.

Originating as a Western Christian feast day honouring one or two early saints named valentinus, Valentine’s Day is recognised as a significant cultural, religious, and commercial celebration of romance and romantic love in many regions around the world.

Some of the gifts shops owners told NAN in the city that they were recording high sales of gift items.

They said the traffic of students of higher institutions in Jos to the gift shops had become unprecedented, adding that the celebration billed for Friday had suddenly profited them.

Mrs Udeme Adams, a shop owner at Ahamadu Bello way, said she had experienced huge traffic of customers since the week began.

“I understand the psychology of my customers ; so I filled every compartment of my shop with red coloured gift items such as bags, flowers, clothing and soft toys,” Adams said.

Mrs Edith Ekoyong, said she had made huge sales within the build-up the celebration, adding that the demand for her wares was quite impressive.

Chinelo Amanmgbo, an online business lady, said she had so far delivered 12 sets of expensive ladies’ hair attachments to different girls preparatory to the celebration.

“So many young men have placed orders for ladies’ hair attachments this week. The costs of the hair attachments range from 20,000 to N50, 000.

“I have been, however, instructed to deliver the gifts to identified ladies within Jos town,” Amanmgbo said.

Mr Ugo Ndube, also a trader, said he had ordered some essential gift items twice this week to meet up with the demands of his customers, describing the sales as good.

NAN reports that so many shops, restaurants, boutiques, hotels within the metropolis have been decorated in Valentine Day’s traditional red colour in readiness for the celebrations.
