Viral conjunctivitis outbreak hits Angola

Angolan central west Benguela province has been hit by viral conjunctivitis, Julio Abreu, the Provincial Coordinator of the Group to Fight the Outbreak, said on Friday.

According to Abreu, several patients infected with conjunctivitis are currently undergoing treatment in an isolated area of the local hospital, to prevent contamination and dissemination of the disease.

He explained that so far a total of 1,217 cases had been diagnosed in Benguela province and that during the last 24 hours 206 new cases have been recorded in many municipalities.

Local hospitals in the province are already treating the disease, the ophthalmologist said, urging people to adopt hygienic measures such as washing hands with soap and water after treatment and the use of cold compresses over the eyes.

Angolan capital Luanda is also being hit by the virus, mostly children of five municipalities of the province, bringing the number to a total of 32 people infected with the disease, according to data disclosed by a doctor earlier this month.

Conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye, is an inflammation of the outermost layer of the white part of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelid.
