WHO calls Chinese health worker infections ‘sad,’ advocates training

Infections of Chinese medical staff with Covid-19 can be brought under control with the right kind of safety training, World Health Organisation (WHO) officials say.

“The fact that there are over 1,700 health workers among all the cases of Covid is very sad news,’’ WHO’s emergency operations chief Mike Ryan told a news briefing in Geneva on Friday.

According to WHO infectious hazards specialist Sylvie Briand, such types of infections during outbreaks are usually not due to a lack of protective gear but to inadequate safety procedures, especially among exhausted staff who work around the clock.

The UN health agency is currently seeking information from China on when exactly these health workers were infected, how many were wearing protective gear and how many were properly trained.
