Support Towards Advancement, Networking and Development of Women and Children (STAND), an NGO, has donated safe delivery kits to pregnant women to mark the 2019 International Women’s Day (IWD).

Speaking at the formal inauguration of the NGO on Friday in Ibadan, the founder, Mrs Olusayo Adeleye, said the donation was to ensure that more women survive childbirth.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that theme for this year’s IWD is “Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change.’’

Adeleye said that the distribution of the delivery kits would reinforce efforts to reduce infant mortality rate and enhance safe delivery among pregnant women.

“Everyone has a role to play in reducing maternal mortality rate. Ensuring that more women survive childbirth contributes to our socioeconomic development.

“The distribution of delivery kits to pregnant women will help in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality rate, especially in the areas where there is little or no access to basic medical facilities.

“We intend to distribute the kits in rural areas and villages across the state.

“Ensuring women have voices also mean they access to basic healthcare,” she said.

Adeleye urged women to use the occasion of the IWD to reflect on taking their rightful places in the society.

In her remarks, Ms Yejide Genga-Ogundare, a woman’s rights advocate, said that there was need for the nation to have more women representation in leadership roles.

She urged women to rise above  patriarchal stereotypes by challenging harmful and limiting social norms and standards.

“We are living in very exciting times in history where the world now expects gender balance and parity but if women continue to suffer from avoidable diseases and preventable deaths, then we are losing the fight for gender equality.

“I urge women to continue to play critical roles in forging a gender-balanced society for a better and prosperous future,” she said.
