Yam farmers in Benue apeeal for early distribution of fertilizer, other farm inputs

Yam farmers in Benue have appealed to the state government to ensure that subsidized fertilizer and other farm inputs are distributed early to farmers ahead of the planting season.

They made the appeal in an interview with the Nigeria News Agency in Makurdi on Wednesday, saying that the measure would help to ensure bumper harvest.

One of the farmers, Mrs Apeidoo Yongo, regretted  that the delay in making farm inputs available to farmers was affecting farm yields negatively.

Yongo said: “The government usually makes fertilizer available to us very late and this often leads to poor yields.

“Most times the inputs get to us around July and August. Even this year, the launch was done in July after cultivation had taken place.”

Also, Mrs Awuese Kwaghga, said that the ideal time to apply fertilizer to crops was around April and June latest. Any date after that, will be late.

“Even though we get the product late, we still apply it to our farms because it is better to apply it even if it is late than not applying at all,” Kwaghga said.

Mr Wilfred Adigo said that in spite of the late application of the product to their farms, they were still anticipating bumper harvest.

“Giving the grades and quality of yams that I see in the markets, it means during the harvest time, we will surely reap bountifully,” he said.
