Zambian leader pardons 2,984 inmates to mark Africa Freedom Day

Zambian President Edger Lungu has pardoned 2,984 inmates from correctional facilities as part of celebrations to mark this year’s Africa Freedom Day that falls on May 25, a minister said on Friday.

Minister of Home Affairs Stephen Kampyongo said during a press briefing that the figure represents 2,829 males and 155 females. He said the pardoning of the inmates has resulted in the reduction in prison population to 19,248.

And the Zambian leader has provided unconditional release from prison of 2,719 inmates with minor offences and were waiting for convictions as part of efforts to decongest the correction facilities.

The correction facilities are holding 4,330 inmates who have not been convicted.
